Welcome to Pack 52!

Cub Scout Pack 52 is made up of Kindergarten to 5th grade students attending primarily Del Rey Elementary school in Orinda, CA.  Our pack has been in formation for over 50 years!  The site includes announcements about upcoming meetings, pack news, a calendar of upcoming events and a place to share great photos of our pack in action.

Let’s Get Ready to Race!!! Annual Pinewood Derby (Saturday, February 6th)

Scouts and Families!
On behalf of the Pack 52 Leadership Committee, I am excited to formally kick off this year's Pinewood Derby!  We know it was a challenging 2020....and while 2021 is already dishing out its fair share of obstacles, we are hoping that this year's derby brings a welcome reprieve to our Scouts!  While we are going to have one major change to the format (remote vs in-person racing), we are optimistic that the rest of the event (and efforts leading up to it) should be otherwise (relatively) unencumbered.  There's a lot of information in this email, so thank you in advance for taking time to read!
Whether you're new to the derby or a part of a veteran racing team, the Pinewood Derby is the highlight of the Scouting Year and offers our Scouts the opportunity to work literally hand in hand with a parent or guardian on an experience that will be remembered for a lifetime.  It's not about winning or losing, but how you 'approach the race'.  Have fun, don't worry too much and leave it all out there on the track!
Mark your calendars! Race weigh-in is Wednesday, February 3rd and Race day is Saturday, February 6th!   And without further ado, here are your details:
Race Format (Scout and Parent Races):
We will be having our traditional Den races with further details on logistics leading up to, and including, race day below.  Please note that we are also having the Second Annual Parents Race where parents are encouraged to also enter a car into the derby, where it'll be raced alongside other equally (or unequally) skilled parents.  There is a little more 'leniency' on the rules for the parent cars, so take some creative liberties where you like.  We even had one or two parents last year dusting off 20-30 year old cars from dad's former glory years in Scouts of a past era, so feel free to go that route as well and see if the 'ole dragster still 'has it' where it counts!   
Derby Kits:  
Please be on the lookout for communications from your Den Leader for information on distribution of derby car kits.  The kits contain all you need to complete your car excluding i) final finishing (i.e. sanding/painting), ii) weights (check out Amazon or Moraga Ace Hardware for ample opportunities....or simply the garage workbench for nuts, bolts, coins, etc) and lastly, iii) tools.  If that all sounds too daunting of a task, fear not!!!  You'll find information below regarding an opportunity to participate in the Pack derby car workshops, not to mention there is no shortage of self-proclaimed experts and other web-based resources on derby advice and tips with a few simple clicks of the mouse through internet searches.  
Race Car Weigh-in / Impound:
Wednesday, February 3rd: 3 pm - 6 pm @ TBD Location.   All derby cars must be officially registered, weighed-in and impounded 3 day BEFORE race day!  Bring your car to the weigh-in where you'll be assigned your racing credentials while being officially weighed to comply with the 5 oz maximum weight requirement.  Tools for fine tuning of weight and wheels, including graphite for axles, will be available.  Stay tuned for additional information on the location of the weigh-in which will be determined as we get closer to the event.
Race Day:
Saturday, February 6th @ "Undisclosed Racing Location".  Due to COVID restrictions this year, the Pinewood Derby will be raced remotely at an "undisclosed and secure location" (but very generously offered up by one of our Pack Leadership Committee members) offering the highest security and safety for all our staff.  Unfortunately fans, paparazzi and other's looking to catch a glimpse of famous racers, exciting cutting edge and creative car designs and other race day excitement will need to 'shelter in place'.  While we won't have our traditional in-person group racing, the PLC will set up and commission the track as well as conduct the race in a socially responsible distant manner.  We ARE welcoming any volunteers that have some technical 'know-how' as to how we can webcast and/or record the event for broadcast/replay to the Pack and Dens.  If this is something up your alley, please do not hesitate to let us know if we can count on YOU!   Final standings and awards will be communicated at the conclusion of the event and all cars will be returned to Scouts via the Dens.  Stay tuned for more information on how Scouts will be able to vote for their favorite car designs consistent with past years.
Race Car Sponsorships (New in 2021!):
What race car, driver and racing team would be complete without a sponsor?  Would a NASCAR or Formula One rig look right without all the important logos reminding the driver of the incredible support they've received leading up to race day?
This year we are trying something new given the challenging environment and encouraging our Scouts to offer sponsorship opportunities for their car to family and friends looking to support Pack 52.  Each year, the Pack heavily relies upon our annual holiday mistletoe sales where we generate $1700-$2000 in much-needed operating capital to keep the Pack functioning.  At $5 a bag of mistletoe, that's a lot of holiday cheer AND valuable support of the Pack.  Unfortunately as you all know, we were unable to implement our fundraiser given COVID and would greatly welcome the support of our Scouting community.  Scouts can enumerate sponsor names and provide to the Den leader along with sponsorship funds.  No sponsorship amount is too small and special recognition will be provided to all sponsors of winning racers!  Thank you for all your support of Pack 52!
Derby Car Workshop:

Never built a derby car?  Did all your tools in boxes get mistakenly donated to charity as part of the recent move?  Did your last homemade bird house get condemned by the local housing authority?  Worry not!  Don't miss this opportunity to sign up for available time slots at one of our upcoming derby car workshops and you'll be good to go!

Hello Pack 52 Scouts and Families,

On behalf of the entire Pack 52 Leadership Committee, I'd like to welcome you to the start of the Scouting year!  First and foremost, I hope that this finds all of our Scouts and families healthy and safe in what continues to be challenging times.  Now more than ever, the Cub Scout motto of 'Do Your Best' applies to almost everything around us and we hope everyone is adjusting to the new approach to remote schooling (and living) in which we all find ourselves.

CANCELLED - Spring 2020 Campout - Maud Whalen Group Campsite @ Briones Regional Park

After careful consideration of the current situation surrounding the Coronavirus, the PLC has regrettably determined it is in the best interest of the health of our Pack's families, to cancel our Spring Campout.  Your Den Leader will be in touch to any families that previously paid for a full refund or credit to future dues.  In the meantime, please continue to stay safe, healthy and vigilant!


CANCELLED - Scout Day @ Oakland A's (vs Tampa Bay Rays) - Saturday, May 2nd

Due to the suspension of the Major League Baseball's season as a result of the Coronavirus, the Oakland A's have cancelled the upcoming Scout Day baseball game.  Your Den Leader will be in touch to any families that previously paid for a full refund or credit to future dues.  In the meantime, please continue to stay safe, healthy and vigilant!
